Hullo fellow members.I have been having so much fun on this web site...and also fixing up my old car. Here are the logistics; 1968 Chrysler Newport Custom.Four door hardtop.MM1 Turbine Bronze Metallic paint,Black guts and top.Front bench with big centre arm rest cloth/vinyl material.383 2bbl 727 2.76 gears.Power drum brakes, steering.Sales bank car with some dealer installed options.
OK with that out of the way, this thread is about fixing 'er up on the cheap.Roughly no more than 2,000.00 to 3,000.00 on the road. Not "show" quality, but a nice cruiser that looks good at the local cruise night.
First,I only paid one hundred bux for her.No BS!!
The second owner, who owned it since 1970,had to get rid of her.His city bylaw states that no car is allowed on your own property without valid and up to date tags/licence plates. The city bylaw officer found the car...after sitting since 1974!!!(Somebody squealed) Basically,he gave me the car.He got re-imbursed for the ad in the Old car AutoTrader. We talked a few times, and he knew I would do something with the beached whale. It did not run and looked like a genuine POS.From years of neglect and kids vandalizing it over time.
The next expense was get it home..cost;140.00 in fuel in my neighbours dually. He is also a car nut that happened to have a car trailer! We took a Saturday to drive three hours each way to bring 'er home.
The windshield was the next "big" purchase.$172.50 used.I drove to National Moparts to get it.BTW a C body windshield does fit in a C body trunk!! Plus a full tank of gas...$100.00.
Other "big" purchases;left sunvisor and vent wing glass, horn ring and center button $20.00 Various shop supplies, wiring connectors, cleaners 30.00
The cheapest things are for free. !banana Here is the gimme list: !thumb 5 14" road wheels with trim rings and AMC centers(thanks Barry Greer) 4 2157514 Michelin tires--used only one summer. Not even 5,000 miles on them (thanks Ray Ford-66Fury) Complete intsrument panel (Thanks,Charlie Barr) turn signal switch (Thanks,Nigel) sunvisors..inside rear view mirror..(Charlie again) Pertronix ignition kit (Thanks,James)
Finally, nobody can total the year's time spent cleaning, rewiring, and fixing what's broke. !stars So far,I have worked on getting the engine running, fix the vandalized wiring and update it with the MAD conversion method.Plus the dash was pulled, cleaned and got everything in it working.Free time well spent!!
The brakes and body work is next...that's when I really have to spend.. Later,Leaburn !thumb [ Edited ]

Sorry, guys.I do not know how to post pics.I did send them to you..if you want to post them. The vinyl top was dealer installed. It was a poor install and there is almost nothing left to it.The roof still shows its paint. Everything was either stiff or stuck on this car.No surprise after 34 years of doing nothing but sitting. She was on blocks, and there was oil in the cylinders. The engine did turn free. With some prep work with a total cost of ZERO! I had a set of points lying around..and some oil and filters on my shelf. I got her running..on the old plugs, wires, and carb. The carb I had to take apart and soak. The throttle shaft was stuck..but loosened up after a few days.I jammed it back together--without a kit.Surprisingly she runs!! Puurr like a kitten and no noises..except the non-existent exhaust!!LOL!! The accelerator pump is dried out,and will need a kit.She does need a frost plug kit for the heads, however.I have two on the left side head behind the exhaust manifold leaking. For now I can move her around when I need to. Well,I'm off to spend "big" money on those frost plugs.. Sincerely,Leaburn

Nothing happening this week.My boss is on holidays and I have been busy at work and exhausted when I get home. Later,Leaburn

WHOA! Thanks! One pic shows the dash apart, but the first couple of pics show it done. The car shares living space with my restored '68 New Yorker. The interior overall is in great shape.Only a couple of holes in the floor.Trunk is SOLID! Not a crack in the dash pad. I found two copies of the B-sheet when cleaning her out. Hardly anything left to the dealer installed vinyl top. The previous owner had painted evry little blister on the car to keep it from rusting. It worked.Even the floors were painted with red tremclad rust paint. Cheers!! And a special thanks to sjak_brak !thumb
