Well here's a MUCH delayed response... After driving the car for most of the season, I'd say your advice on drilling the plate for 1-2 shift was good Furious70.
My 2-3 shift with the kit installed is great, but most 1-2 shifts are so hard that they make the whole car shudder, unless I feather the gas just as it's about to shift, or I'm accelerating really hard. Really annoying, and probably hard on the trans, u-joints, etc.
I'll have to drop the VB again to drill out the hole in the separator plate and reinstall the checkball.

ya, I'm not happy with the 1-2 shift in my a500, too harsh. It wasn't firm enough the first time so I had the builder do some more, but he found another problem when he was in there that was the main culprit, so I had him go too far. This winter it might come back apart to see if it can be undone.

I wish I could remember what I did when I put the TF2 in my New Yorker, but I believe I left the ball in, IIRC - no complaints. Definitely made a great improvement in the overall behavior of the trans. Stock, they are pure slushboxes.
I just had a shift kit installed in my T&C, and it doesn't shift any firmer than before....
What can I do to keep it in 1st gear longer, and shift a lot more positively? Right now it feels very mild, and shifts quite soon, even in mid throttle acceleration.
Contrastingly, my Monaco would wait quite a bit to shift on mid throttle accels, and would not jar you unnecessarily, but was very firm and positive.

some line pressure probably. I'm sure you've double checked the kick down? I like to preload my kickdowns more than what's called for to get higher upshifts in mild driving and get downshifts on decel. You have to monkey with the linkage (or cable for me) to make sure you don't inhibit WOT travel when you do it though.
