First of all, merry christmas to all and thanks for the help over the past year! with all your advise I was able to install duallys, find a kit to rebuild the carb, debate buying a new vinly roof (did not, painted it instead), and restore to drive-ability after a nice big front right quarter crash. very much apprieciated!
today, I was replacing the p/s belt when I took a good look at the a/c compressor and system. I'm thinking of pulling it out. anybody care to weigh in on whether this is a good idea or not? plusses: less weight, more hp, better milage, cleaner under hood look. minuses: it's not really bothering anyone now, might release coolant, harder job than it looks? the a/c has not worked since I've owned the big brown car, and I like to ride with the windows down in the summer anyway to enjoy the 4dr hardtop no-post look. anyone done this job before? !santa

well since your way up north then removing it is not a bad idea... in fact that rv2 compressor weighs about 25 lbs. it will look cleaner and it is easy to reinstall if you move further south like down here in ga. If it hasnt been working i seriously doubt there is any freon left in there. just plug up the connections going into the firewall so that the moisture and air does not corrode your evaporator. also plug up the condensor and any other lines you take off and store them somewhere in case you want to reinstall. It is hard to find some of the parts for the system, and sometimes expensive.

You also need the non a/c alternator bracket to reinstall the alternator in a lower position to allow a single belt to route around it. I believe that is all you need to change over.
Thanks Phil! I got the neccessary belt from the local parts store, but no bracket. Anybody got one for sale or trade? 73 Newport, 400ci, no air pump, non a/c alternator mounting bracket. or if anybody would be so kind as to help me with dimentions and location, I can make one myself.

Leave it or remove it....but make sure you keep all the parts! It's getting harder to find all the stuff nowadays (I still need 99% of the a/c stuff for my '69 Roadrunner.....all I have are the vents and dash pad. )

Maybe I should put my original AC system up for sale up here. I pulled it off awhile ago, being I live up here in MN and I own a 'vert. By the way, I left the large dubble pulley on the crank, but I replaced the alternator with a single-pulley version and use just a single belt. However, I did not change the alternator bracket. Is this really necessary? It seems to work fine without any modifications. Anyone have a picture showing the differences between the 2 different brackets?
Rich's link to 440source shows both brackets. I was kinda thinking the same thing tho, it looks as if I can run a belt just altenator-crank pulley and not have to move the stock alt location. just gotta make sure it clears UNDER the water pump. and leave the p/s-fan-crank belt alone. gonna try it today and if it works (and the alt puts out the same voltage as with 2 belts) then I think the a/c is as good as gone.
