C-barge Where would this L be? I have no paper work for this as I bought it from a salvage yard. Any ID on the motor itself? I thought the vin was stamped somewhere. It does say 440 HP on the motor by the distributer. Thanx in advance. !thumb

Thanx that's a nice bit of info, but as I said earlier I have no car or vin tag to research. I bought just the sub frame with motor trans brakes and radiator. I need numbers off the block. Where are they located?

In 1968 (at least in B-bodies built at Hamtramck) there may be a partial VIN or there may not be. If they are, the last 8 digits of the VIN (year, plant, and sequential production number) are stamped on the back of the block right where the transmission bolts up and near the oil pressure sending unit. For example, my Charger R/T has 8B356411 stamped there.
Since there is no full VIN stamped on a '68 block, you won't find an "L" anywhere. In 1969 the factory started stamping full VINs on a machined pad on the passenger side lower end of the block.
On Edit: if it is a "L" code 440 then there should be a "HP" stamped on the same pad where you found "D440". <span class='smallblacktext'>[ Edited Tue Mar 17 2009, 12:35PM ]</span>
Art!,..the only way you may be able to tell,is to pull off a valve cover (now i'm not 100% sure on this),and if the valve spring has a single spring,..it is a non-hp engine! And if it has a single spring w/damper,it will be a 375 hp model! Most hp models had a windage tray also, although that is not written in stone either! Also most hp models had a 10 1/2" torque converter, while the non-hp's had an 11 1/2" converter! hope this helps!

Thanx guys I think we got somewhere. There is an HP stamped on the front of the block after the 440' I thought I mentioned that. guess not. Also the torque converter is smaller than all the others. I guess we know what that means. Not getting rid of this one anytime soon. might be an expensive rebuild as It is stuck and has been a long time. Time will tell.

The 5th digit in the VIN is the motor designator In the VIN, the first digit is the car line, the second is the price class, the 3rd is the number of doors, the 4th is the roof type, 5th is the engine, 6th is the year produced and the 7th is assembly location then the rest is the sequence number. I believe that all 440s have the 11 3/4" torque converter, only the 383 HP and 340 (and HEMI) got the 10 3/4" converter. If my memory serves.
