My 64 Imperial has a Park lever next to the push buttons. To leave the car in Park you put the park lever down (in park) and the push button in neutral. To drive the car you lift the park lever up and push the appropriate button to drive. On the Imperials as soon as you put the car in gear the parking brake automatically disengages. Pretty cool.
I love the push button system in my Imperial. I have never tried starting in 1 and shifting to 2 but I bet that it would work pretty well. It is not exactly a race car.

Used to call 'em "Type writers" around Union Grove way back when. Reverse valve body and punch R for race. I once had a 64 New Yorker and indeed it had a park pawl. It was lever activated as said above.
