on the topic, anyone have favorite tips for installing intake gaskets and intakes? asking since I have a vacuum leak on mine, like I said originally.
I only used a valley pan and liberal copper coat on my factory iron. No paper port gaskets. No pan sealant. I torqued to specs, however I did not use some special factory order, just kind of worked my way around alternately, inside to out, like common sense tells you.
I do remember one bolt requiring noticeable effort to tighten down.... the driver side far rear.

for aluminum manifolds i use the paper gaskets.are you tightening or torqing? on an aluminum manny be sure to torque to spec using specified pattern.it will ensure proper sealing.
Don't forget that you'll need a tall throttle bracket, and then you have to properly adjust the kickdown or you'll burn up your transmission in short order. Mancini sells the proper bracket: http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/thbrwiki3ve.html
Do a site search for "kickdown adjustment" - I put up a thread a couple years ago with pics that shows you how to do it fast and right.
I use an Eldebrock # 9266 heat isolator gasket, the base and filter from a Mopar "unsilenced" air cleaner (Road Runner/ GTX type) that is about 2.5" tall, and top it off with my dual snorkel air cleaner top - it just fits under the hood with about 1/4" to spare.
I just picked up a gently used performer rpm intake for 80 bucks and ran into the kick down linkage issue today. I ordered the mancini adapter to solve the issue. I'd rather try and make the stock linkage work rather than using the lokar cable.
I had the Holley street dominator on there (got it for the height) but couldn't get it tuned right so I'm going to try the rpm. Before this mess I was using the stock edelebrock performer intake with no issues but I found a crack and thought i would try and get some more top end power. I think it's going to be a tight fit even with the drop base filter on my car. I was also using the heat insulator gasket but I might have to bail that out.
Also, I just use the valley pan with no paper gaskets just gasgacinch on both sides (heads and pan) and the same between the pan and the intake. I use black rtv in the crack between the heads and block and along the front and back under the pan hold down rails. Let it sit overnight after everything is torqued down.

Im surprised that anyone would have any height probs because i have used a weiand single plane and currently a m1 single plane both with 3 in filters and 850 holleys and never had hood probs. must be the bracing on different model and year hoods that causes interference
I just measured the height on my car with the performer rpm and an edelbrock air cleaner with the drop base and I have about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch clearance. That's without any spacer just the carb gasket.
I have about 1/2" clearance at the center, 3/8" on the edge of the round part, and 1/4" to none at the end of the snorkels - the drivers side one sometimes rubs a bit...
