sounds like either the choke is not opening or the carb is flooding out the engine. Have you looked at your fuel filter lately? If your running a holley carb and it backfired thru the carb you may have damaged the power valve in the carb too.

Well Here's an oldie but goodie with a great turnout.
Big John came to my house today. We were prepared for the worst, but ended up with simple things.
Johns Carb had a fuel leak at the accelerator pump on his holley, it was nothing more than loose screws. The carb was loose on the base plate gasket, vacuum leaks galore. Someone adjusted the pull off too much. I can't tell how it will react when it's cold yet, but I can say this.
He and his Dad (Sam) are driving home with ear to ear grins on their faces. John said it runs like a totally different car. I have to agree. An hours worth of work, 10 dollars worth of parts and carb cleaner, and I managed to transform his car into what it felt like when it was new.
Fixed his steering jamming problem too. The trans mount bolts were missing. Rummaged through my pile of crap and put the car together for him in a few hours.

Well, It's true. I guess I screwed up on Johns car, but I plead the 5th. A piece of dirt got up into a metering tube and killed the car. So I had to go down to Johns house and bail him out of my shotty work. LOL Special thanks to Johns Mom, Hope, for the Banquet she put on for lunch. PURP!
Here I am Ramming Johns Chrysler. Ahhhh His Chrysler won
John and I when it was all over
And of coarse, John had me looking at other things in the car. . . .
I spoke with John today, it was his first day back to school. He said the popping was gone, the car started without any effort, and didn't waste any time driving away with it. Problem solved. He also seems to think there was a marked improvement in the gas mileage.
