Shop said they mag'd it. I won't be able to get up to the shop for at least a week, probably two but I can't wait to look it over. If something's fishy, I'll take it for a second opinion to a shop I know better.
I was reading up on block repair a little today, and it's probably just cheaper to find another block than repair this one. It's been bored .030 anyway as it turns out. Also, I have spares but the original "TNT" block I want to save; that one's not to be abused.
I mark everything i bring in to the shops,I TRUST NO ONE.I droped off a 440-6 crank and i got a 383 crank back,in short i got screwed.Make sure it is you're block you get back, and not a bad core that they had lying around. Those blocks had plenty of meat in them, even to go .060,and i would get another opinion on the cracking, it might just be a little webbing from DAY ONE.Sometimes these happen around the saddles by the main caps, but there is a lot of stress there. !nervous Glen

Well let's try again. I brought out the old "Cursed" 440 and am going to clean it up, take the heads off and check it out. Theoretically the bottom end is still fine as I rebuilt this engine about 7000 miles and 8 years ago. It's been sitting for about 2 years now, in a garage. Hopefully the bores are clean. I remember it burning oil on start-up despite the heads being rebuilt so maybe it just needs new valve seals. This engine's done a lot of sitting around but never failed to run.
Thought my Firebird would make a good backdrop since it was already out of the garage and uncovered.

Hurst, thanks. I'll see if I can find a copy! (at least there was one serious reply- LOL!)
Chris:
Windsor, it's a Mallory unilite, maybe 10 years old or less. It was on that 440 with the cracks when I got it, then this engine went into the NYer that the other 440 came from... follow that? lol I love Smokey & the Bandit references, too.
Snotty, the Firebird already runs 13's and the (Chevy- blah at least parts are cheap) 355 in it already makes more power to the wheels than any stock 440 I've ever had dynoed. !crazy Better MPG too!
It's a 4-spd and handles like a rat in a drain pipe. I can't sell it because it's just way too nice and too much fun and I love it. Plus, it was "born" the same year as I was! Everyone should have a solid representation of a car from the year they were born! That's original 29,000 mile bodywork and paint but everything underneath is modified with the best. (Except the Chevy engine; wish it was a Poncho mill!)
