8 3/4's don't have the ratios stamped on them anywhere either...there's a tag just like on the other rears with the ratio stamped on it under a carrier to housing bolt. There's 2 flat machined spots on an 8 3/4 stump around the carrier to housing bolts, one for the ratio tag & one for the suregrip tag if so equipped.
Clair pretty much hit tall the ratio's for the 8 1/4".

There is an 8 3/8 gearset but it fits in the 8 1/4 housing also. I can't remember the years/application but my memory says it was maybe a pickup/van gear? What year maunal is that you're looking at?
Basically if you've got a 70' with that style housing I think it'll be an 8 1/4 but I could be wrong here.....could it be that the heavier C-bodies also got the 8 3/8 ring gear? Dunno..
It's still the same housing & most just change to an 8 3/4" when available as most of the C-'s got that anyway. If you were to change you can use the shock plates & U-bolts since the 8 1/4 & 8 3/4 both have the 3" axle tubes. Might have to shorten the driveshaft a bit though.

Thanks Butch, I don't have the original manual I was just going by the picture, but like you say the 8 3/4 gearset also fits in the 8 1/4 housing. I will get it up in the air and take a better look at it this weekend.
