My motor is at the machine shop. They will give me all the details on monday after gauging everything. They are recommending new pistons wheather I need the cylinders cut or not. It broke rings in the #3 & 5 cylinders but no visual damage. My thought is now to piston choices: forged or hypertectic and the benefits of either choice or of a third I am weak on piston info. Any good ideas??? I think I will just run my heads with new springs and rockers until I can afford the Edelbrocks.

Forged pistons are stronger but require more clearance as they expand more so you might get some piston slap untill the engine warms up.Hypers are great for N/A motors if you dont plan on running nitrous or forced induction imo they are the way to go just keep the CR around 9.5 for premium or 8.5 for regular pump gas. just my 2 cents. [ Edited Fri May 12 2006, 10:51PM ]
I am running the hypers in my 440. The forged ones are more expensive, will take more power, weigh more, but I think they expand and contract less. The Hypers I believe are the ones that expand. They have a higher silicone content and require a larger ring gap. But are still plenty capable for street use and mild strip use, but as mentioned, no spray or forced induction.
I have the KB flat top hypers, and KB estimates my CR is about 9.5. Adding the closed Eddys should bring me up to about 10.5, which from what I have been told is the practical limit of 91 octane.
hmm.. seems 80-D and I have different thoughts. I am going on what my engine builder and several people on Moparts told me. The builder told me to not run it hard till it warmed up to minimize slap. Need to look into this deeper to find a definite answer.

That is very informative info. If correct almost any street use motor may be far better with cast pistons. Unless your at the track every weekend bangin the gears with high revs and juice.
Love this board. Learn something all the time. But can you believe everything you read on the internet?! LOL
It's been raining in Cleveland and I'm aching to get the car out. Just put new leaf spings in the rear and KYB shocks on all 4 corners.
Pistons are chosen and on the way. My pistons had been reringed in the past, once or twice, said the machine shop. The cylinders were badly tapered so the only correction to make it true was 60 over. So I ordered a set of Keith Black hypertectic pistons. As soon as they arrive the shop will spin balance the assembly and the motor can go back together. I will be using stock heads possibly a ported set, we will see the budget. Compression specs put me 9.1 to 9.5 depending on gasket choice. I really want to drive the Fury, the weather is great. Well back to painting the inner fenders.
