11secondC wrote ... I had my MP dizzy set up by my engine builder, got to watch that business. Problem with mine was it had way too much advance built in, and to get the advance in where we needed it, we had to weld up the slots and so some tweaking on the advance springs.
Ended up with 12 degs intial and 24 total mechanical all in by 2400 rpm. No vacuum advance, but mine doesn't see awhole lot of drive time.
Hi Dana, 12* initial and 12+24=36* total should be perfect. !thumb These engines are supposed to work best with 34-36* total advance.
I also welded the slots in my MP distributor, possibly a little too much. I have about 16* initial and 34* total. The engine doesn't kick-back when starting, but once it's hot, it pings occasionally (a couple times a minute) when idling at a stoplight. I can feel it shudder through the gas pedal more than hear it. Been meaning to pull apart the distributor and file the slots open a bit more, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
...or with gas prices being what they are this year maybe I'll just turn the distributor back a couple degrees and see if I can run on 87 octane.

PS: I find it humorous how the two posts from other boards that FuriousVIP quoted contradict each other rather drastically.

Mine doesn't seem to be real sensitive to total timing. I've run as high as 40 total, and as low as 32, there wasn't any appreciably difference in et or mph, did seem to lose a little bit of throttle response down low with 32, but the big converter covers up alot when u mash the go pedal.
