I picked up a used Console mounted tack, the type that looks like it is in a tin can, anyway the numbers on the face apear to be a pale yellow. I was expecting white numbers on the face of the tach. Was there different colors offered every year, or is this tach a year specific one.
Also the three wires comming from the unit are, black, orange, and yellow. I am guessing, without opening the canister, that of course black would be a dash ground, orange positive when the key is turned on, and yellow the neg side of the coil. Is this correct??

I think you're going to find that goes to the negitive side of the coil. I am assuming that is a Chrysler Tach you got? Maybe someone has a wiring diagram for that. I don't have too many Docs for the 66 300's, but I own one.

As far I know stock console mounted tachs need a "driver or sender" I have seen them on ebay often, check ebay #4602633870 for the sender and the same guy has a tach for sale (see if this is the same) . I have thought of putting this set up in my 66 polara but by the time I would buy a console and parts you could easily have $1500 into it.

The sending unit listed on ebay # 4602633870 would have been used on a 65 300, but the 66 used a newer design. That mounted on top of the console and was self contained in a finished canister. I also believe that the unit is able to pivot slightly back and forth.
