I've been breaking in the new motor and I've noticed that it's been chugging a little when crusing on the freeway...like it's starving for fuel or has a vacuum leak. Anyway, when I got home, I checked the fuel pressure gauge and it showed around 3 pounds. !nope When I left it was at 7 lbs(normal). I also noticed that some fuel had leaked from the front accl pump. So thinking that could be the problem, I tightened that up. A few days later, I fired up the Fury and fuel pressure was back at 7lbs...great..problem solved..or so I thought. Anyway, I let the car idle for about 20 minutes, and during that time the fuel pressure gauge slowly started to drop until it finally read 4lbs... I opened up the throttle while watching the gauge..and it held steady at 4 lbs. I did another freeway run today and opened it up, It still hauls ass so the carb is getting enough fuel for the secondaries. When I arrived back home the gauge showed less than 3lbs I'm running a 440 with a Holley 750 mechanical sec. no choke. It has a new fuel pump, sending unit and gas tank. Could I be having the same problem as Tony P? The fuel pump rod? Any suggestions? Thanks VIP

I'm running a new stock mechanical fuel pump. It doesn't suck any air when I remove the cap...so I assume the tank is not getting pressurized...I replaced the gas cap because it was stamped non-vented. The new, supposedly vented, cap looks exactly the same...but it's not stamped non-vented . I haven't checked the vent tubes yet, that wil be the next step after I try running it without the cap.

Since I didn't do the engine rebuild myself, I can't say for sure if the pump rod was replaced. But, It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't. The tank and everything in it are new..so I don't think it's the sock...but I won't rule that out either. The curious thing is is that it chugs ever so slightly when crusing...so you would think that at 3-4lbs of pressure and a worn pump rod that it would suffer from serious fuel starvation when I open it up...but it doesn't. Could the tuning on the carb be causing the problem? Oh..one thing I did notice today when I got on it was that the engine seemed to knock a little under heavy throttle. Could the timing have something to do with it? I'll have to rule out the possibilities one at a time.
Any knock is a bad knock! What fuel are you running? Could be a timing issue, octane issue or just bad gass issue. Throe in a can of HEAT and back the timing off a hair, assuming you are already running 91+ octane and a mildish 440.

I checked the whole fuel system and found out that the NEW (Made in China) fuel pump is no good.(Gee...I wonder why) So I have a new (Made in the USA) pump and push rod on order.
