I have been wanting to replace my speedometer with a speedo and tack so I dont have to have the tach mounted on the column or other location. My plan is to put a 5 inch speedo and tach side by side in my original speedo location by gutting my spare and working them in. My question is do I use a signal fed (electric) or cable driven speedo. I would prefer the cable but I dont know if it will work on an older car like my 66 Sport Fury. Anyone try this or have any experience.
My EFI already requires a speed sensor, so it's a no-brainer for me. Some of the A-500/A-518 OD autos had speed sensors that mounted in the cable-output position, so that might be an option. I like the electronics because you can easily correct for different tire sizes, gear ratios, etc. I'll be doing one of these when I upgrade my Valiant
I'll be using the matching 10K rpm tach. I've got a pile of the Ultra Lite gages in the car already, so that's my reasoning on the style. Lots of others to choose from.

Clair is correct
I think what he is trying to say is you can replace the cable with an electric speed sensor on the trans and put in an electronic. I can't do that because of the cruise control. I have a 518 trans with the pooter installed. The speed sensor I used is a pass through so I can run a cable and run the needed speed sensor.
For ease of installation, you may want to consider going electronic. Then you don't have to mess with the bulky cables and take a risk of putting too much of a bend it it. The speedo may jump if you get too much of a tight arc in it.
I just seen on a show that I think it was ,Autometer, has an electronic speedo that hooks up and you bring it up to like 50 mph and then you hold it constant for about 10 secs and it sets itself. Of course you need a buddy beside you with a correct speedo . I'm gonna look nto this somemore.
Well I may still buy an electric but my wife bought me a mechanical one for christmas. So I will see how that goes and may still order the electric if I need too. Now I have to buy a matching tach so I can mount them in the original speedometer housing. Wife buys tach = $$ Wife buys water pump = $$ Wife buys housing = $$ Wife buys = priceless (from my bank account) !banana
We have an US account and I have a CAR checking account. US means " if I buy car parts from it I die " CAR means if she sees it has more than 500 she needs shoes.

Dr is right, if you've got the mechanical it should have the same screw size at the speedo end for your cable. 66 & 67 are the cables to use for Aftermarket speedos.
