Hey SF,
Main reason for the cam choice was lower maintenance than a solid, and lower cost than a roller.
It's one of the "Mopar" grinds from Hughes that takes advantage of the larger lifter diameter that Mopar B-RB engines have; able to ramp up faster than, say, a Chevy or a Ford.
Hughes suggested this cam after I gave them the figures for the total cubic inches, compression ratio, cylinder pressure, intake manifold flow, weight of the vehicle, what gear I was going to run, what vacuum I wanted to make, what ocyane gas I wanted to run, and the altitudes at which I'd be doing most of my driving. They also took into consideration the approximate flow numbers on the prepped Edelbrocks that I purchased from them.
I guess the jury is still out on how well it'll work until the motor fires on the dyno.
I posted the Hughes part number wrong; it's an HEH 4650 BL, the specs with my 1.6:1 rockers come out to:

How many miles you looking to put on it a year?
Roller, cost I can definitely sympathize there.
But I am sold on a solid.
I put ~3-5k a year on mine, this year was a little less but I only adjust mine twice a year.
Mine picked up torque/hp, idles smoother and throttle response is better, can't say enough good things about the switch from the 484 hyd to the 528 solid.

Sleeper, what are the specs on your 496? I just had a pump-gas street 496 put together recently, and it's finally in the car, but I haven't been able to really push it yet. I imagine it's fairly tame compared to yours: 9.7:1 compression, 494 hydraulic lift cam, unmilled Eddy heads, Performer (non-RPM) intake and a Holley 770 Street Avenger. It idles very smoothly and quietly, but seems to have lots of undiscovered ponies beneath the surface. I'm curious to know what road you're taking, as in how much power and how streetable?

Wow, Rambler! That oughta be a screamer! You're probably right, once you get a chance to thump on it, I'll bet there's a lot of "hidden" horsepower there!
I'm shooting for 550 HP. Don't know if it'll hit it or not. I also wanted it to idle without a whole lot of "drama", to have vacuum for the power brakes, and have enough low end torque to only run a 3:55 gear.

Oh, it'll have enough Torque for the 3.55's LOl!
I only run 3.23's right now & it pulls just fine. And you'll have 25 cubes on me to boot. My converter is only about a 2800 stall ( old factory ST Hemi ) & it idles okay in gear even with that.
I dunno about vaccum for the power brakes though with that cam. I've only got about 11" at idle ( neutral ). My cam is a bit shorter than yours with 240/250 @.050 & .545/.565 lift on 112 centerline. 11" ain't enough for power brakes in my book. But then I also only have 16* initial right now & might be able to go higher which would help, just being conservative on the first setup. Take ya some vaccum readings before you go drive that thing to make sure it has enough. You're running a lower centerline there ( rougher idle but again more cubes than me might eat that ) & quite a bit more lift.
But then maybe Hughes know what they're doing too! I hope so!
For a cam of those specs I thinkI woulda run a solid too, I picture mine as what I see the upper end for a HYD. I used the 284/528 mech in My Sb & it is a great little cam. My buddy runs a Mech in his 451 on the street now & it's a Scott Brown grind too, pretty close to my specs & it runs great.

All this to go from 0 to 60 a bit faster. Sheeeeessssseeeee
I forgot all this shtuff it's been so long. . . But then again, I'm like Butch. Can't see worth a darn. The ol' bones don't move that fast these days.
I'll take my good ol' cruiser. Has enough to get me out of trouble and still keep you guys interested in s hest. Besides. I live in New Jersey where you can't do 60 MPH for more than a milisecond without hitting the brakes for some nit wit.

Hey Butch,
As it turned out, I don't need the vacuum after all since the 300 has manual brakes, so maybe I'll be OK. Your 472 will walk my 496's dog, 25 cubes or no! Something about where those spark plugs are at.....!
Rambler, I forgot the specs earlier:
440 .040 over, 4.15 crank, Eagle H-beams, ProGram crossbolted mains, Hughes "prepped" Eddys, 1.6 rollers, Ross 11:1 (with block decked), ported M-1, and the above-mentioned cam; the choice of which will now cause me loss of sleep and possible recurrent heartburn until I see how it's gonna work out.... I figured Hughes knew as well as anyone..... anyone have any Pepto Bismol?
If it doesn't make 300 HP, I built the bottom end to take another 100 HP shot! That oughta get me into the 17's! LOL

Hey SF440,
It's Hughes lifters and Hughes-matched valvesprings. Like I said, I hope they know what they're doing....
Not too sure about 600 HP; there's a certain Whale (flying variety) around here with a 496 that's a whole lot stouter than what I'm screwing together, and I think he dyno'd just over 600. Went low 12's first time out!
