So i got a $200 cash award for completing some $4M project at work ahead of schedule...whoopie...
What better to spend it on, than a new torque converter for the Fury. So here's my ??... What stall should I be looking at. I have never done anything in the converter arena before....Got some free money and need to spend it. Just because i gots $200, doesn't mean that I am limited to it....
I am running the original 318 block that has pretty much grown into a 340 internally. Cam is Summit's 276/286 duration with a lift of .441/.441 and induction is 340 six-pack. 3.23 gears. And a 727 from a '70-340 Dart. Essentially, a stock 340 set-up. So what was the factory stall, and what do y'all recommend

I'm not an expert on this shtuff as I don't do performance. The best people to answer that is Dana and Butch, there is also someone who keeps chasing Dana down a track too. Can't think of the handle of that masked man at the moment. . . LOL There are a few others also. I'm strictly stock
BUT! if I remember right from previous discussions, you want something in the 2000 RPM stall speed. Just remember to get one for a 273,318 or 340. The 360 has balancing weights on it. If memory serves me, the stock is a 900 RPM stall speed.
If you have a "stock" hp 10 1/2" converter from a 68-71 340 it will stall approx 1600-1850rpm. MP makes an "econo" converter P4876870 which should stall around 1900-2100rpm or 145K .The stock converter was no slouch, and it performed very well behind a stock motor. However,...to get that heavy car moving, the 145k converter should do. These converters are BRAND NEW and offer good compromise between cost vs. perf. Last time i looked they were about $224.00 at Mancini, should be just a bit higher at mopar dealership, but you won't have to pay for shipping.

Be aware that the actual torque output of the engine plays with the stall speed also. Example, if I put a converter with an "advertised" (key word!) stall of 2500 behind my 542 it will probably flash to at least 3500 - 3800 rpms. The same converter behind my stock 318...2000, maybe. Talk to the converter supplier and give him the specs of your combo and tell him your target stall and go from there. That's the simplest way to do it.
