I have a 1969 318 Engine. I need to know which way is the manifold heat control valve is in the open position. Is it when the counterweight is all the way counterclockwise toward the engine or all the way clockwise away from the the engine. My valve is loose. I want to wire it in the open position.
Counterweight is down to be open. When cold the spring overpowers the counterweight to close the valve. When warm the spring relaxes and allows the weight to open the valve.
I responded to your email - did you have any luck?
If my email didn't come through, here's what I wrote in it:
Essentially the counterweight works by gravity, so the position (whether it be away or towards the motor) should be where the majority of the counterweight is pointed at the ground.
Other ways to check:
If you have dual exhaust, wire the valve up, run the car and check the exhaust pressure with your hand at both tailpipes. If it was wired closed then the passenger side tailpipe should have a lot less exhaust flow.
If you have single exhaust, then wire up the valve, run the car and check both exhaust pipes before the join together to see if the exhaust pipe on that side warms up more slowly. If it does then you've wired it closed.
