I was taught to be in third by 25 mph "under light acceleration", so as to be able to drive in 3rd on city streets. When you put your foot to the floor, it will shift later. Playing with the governor weights is the best way to adjust shift points, but requires taking the tail shaft off for each trial. I see no problem with shifting manually. If it was problematic, it wouldn't be able to be done. you can hold it in 1st gear up to 50 mph, but actual acceleration drops off way before that. Practice is what you need to control enthusiastic acceleration runs. This of course, is for a mostly street driven car.

I've found with my 67 440TNT car that it shifts up early if left in drive, even under near full throttle acceleration. However, if locked into 1 from a dead stop it will wind right out - even if you shift up manually early under full throttle. It's the original torqueflite and has all factory linkages etc (stock as a rock in other words)
