on 2 different occasions while driving on a 100 mile cruise, for the first 80 miles my temp needle stayed in the middle then started to climb. On the way home, same route the needle never moved from the center. I have been stuck in traffic on 90 degree days and again stayed in the middle. So I don't know if the guage is working properly or what.

I think, but I'm not sure, a dirty electrical connection to the sender will cause the dash gauge to read low. I think a bad sender would also tend to read low. So for the gauge to start reading high, the engine is most likely overheating. A few things come to mind. - thermostat is sticking every once and awhile. - air in the system. - slipping fan belt. - if you have a thermo fan, it may be sticking. - lower rad hose collapses
The voltage regulator for the gauges might be failing. They run on about five volts...higher voltage- higher readings. Does the fuel gauge read high when the temp gauge does? if so, look into replacing the regulator.
