I'm re-filling my transmission with fluid after replacing filter and pan gasket....68 Dodge Monaco 500...Manual says to put in:
AQ ATF Suffix-A (Dexron)
Well that was a long time ago obviously...Dexron I...Dexron II...Dexron III have all come out since then...and now of course there's Dex-Merc...Is that the right stuff to put in now-a-days?
Dexron II was used a full decade after your car was built. It is now 2014 and most purchase The Same Lab Spec'd Fluid which is the same at WalMart in their Blue Container and some will always be "brand loyal". While others will do as they know.
Just had my 67 Monaco done last summer at a very good shop that specializes in classics and they just used plain Dex III, its just a 727... I think they'd run on pancake syrup if you had too

The current GM Dex spec level is Dexron VI, and is generally backwards compatible. It is a full syn formulation and I can confirm that my 727 likes it quite well.

Dextron is what I use. I have rebuilt about 10 autos... and never the same one twice. I dont quite agree with using "F type" in any tranny that has been rebuild even in a ford. Yes its great for tight clutch packs but hard on tranny shock.
I'm with Steve, I wouldn't use F type in these trans, it was designed specifically for the ford trans that had some different requirements. Dex III replaces all previous ones and is the one you local trans shop would recommend I'm sure

Interesting replies to this question...thank you all for your input. The consensus seems to be either: Type F or a Dexron of some iteration. I took some inventory of whats on my garage shelf...and Ive had 3-4 partial quarts of Dex-Merc on my shelf for some time...always topping off my leaky transmissions with them (mainly in the Spring after they've sat all winter). For some reason, they don't seem to leak when I run them in the spring, summer, fall. Anyways, if I remember rightly...quite a while ago, an old Mopar enthusiast/collector friend told me that Dex-Merc was the right stuff to add...that it was the latest and greatest form of Dexron out there today. I hadn't remembered that prior to starting this thread but it came to me when I found the few quarts on my shelf. I do notice none of you have mentioned Dex-Merc. One mentioned that Torque-flites probably would run on pancake syrup I like to feel good about my decisions...after I've made an (educated) one, so I guess I'm back to the drawing board here...I'll have to go check the shelves of a few car parts stores and see if there is some just plain old Dexron (I, II, III, IV....) available. I know Walmart's blue bottles are Dex-Merc...(been there, done that). It's also good to know that Type F has been used as well...without issues.
