As to the Whiplash, the marketing must be taken with some saltgrains - I don't how they can proclaim to raise cylinder pressure in low CR engines. Maybe against a lopey hot cam, but not gonna happen vs a tame factory cam. But maybe someone that has studied their valve closing events can explain it better.

With the mechanical compression ratio being a fixed number due to piston-crank-head specs, cams affect what is known as dynamic compression ratio. Dynamic compression is what you want to base your cam selection off of for a given grade of fuel. That is why you can see someone run 11:1 static cr with a huge cam and still run on pump gas yet a guy with a smaller cam in a 9.5 static cr engine is having horrible detonation with the same fuel.
Anyways...

In simple terms, with everything else being equal, cam stays open more = less compression, cam stays open less = more compression.
if you want to put a little pep in its step and be pretty pleased across the spectrum, just get a factory magnum spec'd cam, they have good torque and do well in heavier cars. I have one in my 383 with 516 heads and it does quite well, they have the same cam for the 440, and the numbers make it work well with exhaust manifolds since a lot of us dont use headers, and the full spectrum of heads.
mopar performance purple cam, comes with lifters, the specs on it are 268/284 duration, and 450/458 lift.

Well, I 'm writing from a hospital bed and I might be in here for a few days. I decided to try one of those Hughes cams with all the numbers I don't understand, and sure enough it accelerated so hard I got whiplash. I shoulda known better. Next time I'll stick with a Voodoo cam or an Extreme cam.

x2 on the factory magnum cams, a little old fashioned, but a good seat of the pants feel-they save on hospital bills too, no cervical spine sprains or other serious injuries.
