I was wondering if anyone has done this?
Reason I ask is I have a chance to buy a Dana 60 w/4.10 Sure-Grip that came out of a '70 Cuda. It was rebuilt years ago but hasn't ever been installed in a car since. The price is right as it is family, $500.

Yea, I knew it was a little short. What I'm wondering is if I move the springs inboard and mini-tub it I could fit some decent size tires in there. Maybe something 12"-13" wide.
BTW, I know I haven't mentioned the plans for my Fury before so a general run down is in order.
493" BB, A518 auto/OD, 3.91 8.75 rear.
I'm hoping to break into the 12's and getting it to hook up on street tires is going to be a pain. Plus, I'm worried about the 8.75 being able to live behind a 4000+ lb car with that much torque. That's why I thought about buying my cousin's Dana rear.
Throw it in and GO!! Perches should be in the same location, and the E rear is 1/4" narrower overall. 1/8" each side, doubt you will notice the width difference.

You said the same thing I was going to..
For that price I would FIND a way to get it to fit in the car...
BTW I run 12.80's at 3800 with a stock Sure-grip and 3.91 8 3/4 in my Aspen.. and my Mechanic runs 12.90's with a 1971 Road Runner with 1.67 short times at 4350lbs.. and an 8 3/4.

Serious? I thought the perches and length would require relocating the springs inboard. That would be great If I could use it as is howver, relocating the spring perches wouldn't be a problem. I'm just worried about overall length.

WOW! I'm assuming it has aftermarket axles, back brace, etc.., right? I couldn't imagine that living very long.
It's interesting to see how many people think that the 8 3/4" cant live behind a high hp, heavy 4000 lb+ vehicle. As long as you don't "shock"them on a regular basis, they will live fine.By "shock" I mean 12-14" sticky slicks, manual trans,or Transbrake auto. The 68 Cuda's and Dart's with "RACE" hemi's came with the 8 3/4" behind the auto trans models. The 4 gears got the DANA because,Chrysler was confident in the 8 3/4.If that DANA is orig.from a 70 Cuda( you can tell if it has a provision for a pinion snubber)get the build date, take pics and throw it on E-Bay,sink that money you get for it,probably 1,550-3000,(IF it's an orig.70 Cuda DANA and not a TRUCK DANA) into that A-518 trans, because that is gonna break in stock form before that 8 3/4 ever will. But then again,$500 for the DANA and a couple hundred $ in part's and sweat to get it between the wheelwells is the" BARGAIN of the CENTURY". Glen
According to the Axle Tech page on Moparts, the 65-69 C-body rear is 61-3/4", the E-body rear is 61-5/8. That's only 1/8" narrower, which is a non-issue. That axle is EASILY a $1000 bill, maybe more these days. Plus, it's pretty dang stout... I say go for it.
Spring perches appear to be about 1.5" different, so you'd have to relocate them anyway. That might be the time to look in to relocating the springs further in to take full advantage of those huge wheel wells. IIRC, that's what Henry did on the Whale...

Maybe I'm missing something & this is a little off topic.... but how are you going to get a s/b 518 overdrive trans to mount up behind your planned big block??? I have never seen a big block version of that trans, is there an adapter plate available to adapt the bell housing pattern??

SMR (www.smrtrans.com) and JVX both offer adatper plates. However, I plan to use the JW Performance (www.racewithjw.com) Ultra-Bell. It allows straight bolt up to your BB.
BTW, for those that think the A518 is a weak tranny, the A518 internally is just a 727 with an OD. Yes, the OD section has some oiling shortcomings but places like SMR have corrected this problem.
EDIT: BTW, when it comes time to start installing it, I will be documenting everything with pics. I promise I'll share them! [ Edited Thu Aug 03 2006, 12:06PM ]
