the problem with my brand new steering gear: the steering wheel is not coming back after a turn. all ball joints are new or in good shape. also new steering pump. is it possible that the steering valve on top of the gear isn't working correctly? can somebody tell me what's the problem we are talking about a chrysler tow&country 1972
The valve on top has to be centered to work right-if it's out of adjustment the wheel won't spin back, or even worse, it will slam all the way to the stop rapidly. loosen the two bolts a little and tap it with a small hammer to slide it one way or the other. Be careful: there are small O rings that seal it to the housing that can be cut and cause a huge leak if you get too aggressive.
I had the same problem with mine when i installed it and it was just set up to tight when rebuilt i took it to an old time mopar guy that just kept backing off the adjustment till it returned he said that was a common problem with rebuilds and adjustment is easy

The valve body. Raise the wheels off the ground and then start the engine. When it's adjusted right, the wheels should stay straight. When it's off, they will swing hard to the right or left.
Wow, posted at the same minute! The allen bolt will adjust tension, but the valve body will center the wheels. [ Edited Thu Oct 14 2010, 06:12PM ]
