First off, forgive me. There will be few, if any technical terms used in this post.
OK, my gear indicator in my Newport is off. It's about half way from where it supposed to be. Example, in Drive, the needle rests half way in between N and D. Now, I don't think this is a big deal for I have seen it off on a few cars before, but it has slipped into reverse from park a couple of times. This leads me to believe that the linkage needs adjusting.
Now, do I just need to adjust the shifter on the column to where it's on D when in drive, and if so how? Or is it more complicated than that?

If it's slipped to reverse from park then you should start by adjusting the linkage from the column to the tranny.
Pu the car in park, then climb under the car and disconnect the linkage at the lever on the tranny. Then make sure the lever is all the way in park, then try and hook up the linkage again, if it doesn't slip in easily then you will need to adjust things.
Once you know for sure it is in park, and runs through the rest of the gears properly, then you can do the fine adjustment on the column.

Ross is right about the pointer, but if your trans slipped in or out of gear you need to adjust the main linkage....here's the 66 FSM pages dealing with that
