Go to Jeg's and get the Edelbrock power pkg.for $592.00 it has a 600 cfm eddy carb,2-plane manifold and a good torque cam kit that is very streetable, throw on a set of exhaust manifolds from a Dak or Ram. and a mandrell bent exhaust system with crossover,K+N filter,Clutch fan and a mopar perf ign.system with good wires.Believe it or not, those manifolds will flow more exhaust than my 69 340 manifols, they are the closest things to headers, without the clearance problems. This should be a good streetable system for the 318.DO NOT put on a 6pk sytem, this is only for people who Really understand carbs and those holleys will put you in the lineup at the drug store for Prozak!Glen

Most gain is going to be with new heads. Ported 360 heads or Edelbrock if you can afford em' You'll need more air...so a 4 barrel carb and manifold A better cam would help Then you'll need headers and exhaust. Better spark wouldn't hurt either. Oh...and don't forget front disc brakes...Stopping is always a plus. Cheers

Don't spend the money on aftermarket heads unless your going racing...
My mechanic runs 11.80's with a 360 stock intake, stock heads, 9 to 1 Hyper pistons, 509 cam and thermoquad... our friend runs 11.60's with a 360 edlebrock heads, 11.5 pistons, Edelbrock intake and a holley and a huge cam...
Was it worth the extra couple thousand for two tenths?.. no..
You can make stock parts work well at low horspower levels... save the money.. put on headers, exhaust, find a cast iron 4 barrel intake, throw on a edel carb and call it a day..
The 318 being one of the longest run of any v8 engine, is lacking in 3 areas, heads (flow), compression, and valve timing. Since no real performance offering was made we tend to look toward the 340 and 360. Get some great heads or head work, 268 comp cam, dual plane manifold and 600 carb, and gears 3.20 or 3.55. If your going to buy aftermarket heads, then the 360 doesn't have that much of an advantage. Look up Hot Rod, they did a 400 build up and I believe it was achieved cheaper than the fabled chevrolet 350. My 2 cents
Check out www.moparmusclemagazine.com ,they have info on project cars about modifying an 89 Diplomat cop car. They put 235/70/15s on those 15 by 7" rims and it looks good, those 275s are definately wider. On the 318,the 273 had a 4bbl (AFB)version that would work, but you would loose all the smog stuff,(illegal?).Starting in 78 the E46 318 got a 4 bbl through 85 w/the thermoquad and from 86-91 w/a Q-jet.The 2bbl was rated at 140hp and the 4bbl rated at 155hp.The problem w/mounting a 340/360 manifold on this engine is the intake port size 2.08" tall/1.27" wide versus 1.96" tall/1.0" wide for the 318 heads. It will cause a "Reversion" on the flow and you could actually LOSE hp.The cop cars actually had the 360 heads on,so those manifolds will be the large port versions also. The WEIAND "stealth" manifolds have the smaller ports and this would be a good choise along w/ a good T-Q.The exhaust manifolds from a DAK or RAM 318 Magnum(360s have slightly larger openings but will work)flow better that 69 340 manifolds and are avail. anywhere for about 50 bucks at pick-a-parts.A good flowing dual exhaust w/crossover should wake it up from the dead.Stock 340 spec cams really wake up 318s also. !thumb
"It's got a cop !police motor !police ,440 c.i.plant.It's got cop !police tires, cop !police suspension and cop !police shocks,it was a model made before catalytic converters,so it'll run good on regular gas"
Best lines in a movie ever,I MEAN EVER! !thumb Glen
