Hello, I have a 1968 chrysler newport that I bought about 4 years ago out of Washington DC, this car is what I call a question inducer because there are so many things on this car. I wonder why he did this or that and so on... My whole point is that I have this unit FI unit on the car and I want to change over to a carburator. My question is what type? The engine has been built up it has roller rockers and I have the slip on the what type of camshaft but not with me presently well the car run well with FI unit but the gas mileage is really poor. A friend suggested a street avenger holley and another a thermoquad or an edelbrock but I want to be as thrifty as I can at this point because the trans just went out on the car. So I'm thinking of taking all the msd ignition and the holley prjection unit of and selling it, it also has a ram air aircleaner intake on it, it looks like the robot on lost in space, they are dryer duct hoses and they just drape over the engine it looks kind of cheesey you know but it is functional so any help would be appreciated. also the FI unit is sitting on edelbrock intake. Thanks, BongofuryIII

You wont get any improvements at the pump by getting rid of the FI and the MSD, they are helping mileage! How is the mapping on your FI does it run too rich?? A properly tuned FI system will be more efficiant than the best tuned carb. I am going to do a search to see how the Holley system is tuned.
If you don't have access to a A/F ratio gauge or a co2 meter, I would take your caar to a dyno it can be a little pricey but it will pay off in the added driveability/performance/economy you will get with a good tune.
What about timing, rear gears driving style engine size etc. alot of things can contribute to poor mileage. what mileage are you getting now I wouldn't expect double digits from a cammed big block hell my stock 318 2bbl gets about 12mpg. city *shrugs*.

Yeah untill I looked it up I thought it was a MAP based MPI setup laptop tuned with real fuel mapping, I was just too lazy to re-edit the post TBI sucks in my opinion I would clean it up print the manual and sell it on eBay or something.
also the FI unit is sitting on edelbrock intake.
I guess if I would have read the whole post I would have had an idea. [ Edited Sun Jun 11 2006, 06:40PM ]
