My '68 Fury 318 was stumbling a bit on acceleration and lower speeds, which led me to believe it was running lean. The spark plugs did not idicate that however; they looked fine. After thoughtlessly turning adjustment screws and mixture screws I made the problem worse, before finally sitting down and reading how to tune it correctly... Problem for the most part solved- better acceleration and smoother idle-I do notice now there's a slight hiccup and pop to the exhaust, which is not that noticeable. Is this a timing issue? lean? rich? Or maybe I'm being a perfectionist? Thanks.

Check the distributor not really the timing if it is the original the points and the mechanical advance if it's a newer one the mechanical advance if only to make sure they are working right. Then check to see what your timing is set at. For a start.
