In 69 a 383/2bbl car should have a 489 as the last 3 number of the casting. But it could be a 742 case but I highly doubt it. The casting number is on the driver side of the housing near the bottom.

i noticed on my bill of sale it says axle 271/ 2.76, I know it has a 2.76 gear,but what does the 271 stand for. <span class='smallblacktext'>[ Edited Mon Aug 13 2007, 07:33PM ]</span>
On line (2) of your build sheet in sections 4&5 it will show the optoin for your car of what was orderd from the factory. If it says 27 1, the person orderd a 276 gearing, and a (1) suregrip. The 27,which stands for the 2.76 gear,(partial code) to go in box 4.The box 5 is for the sure grip option,if none was orderd,no code,if one was orderd,it got code 1.Put the two together,271.Do not think of this as a 271 gear,in 69-71 the 2.76 gear is offerd,72-74 offerd a 2.76.This option code is known as D51.Yours would come with a 8.75 diff unless order with the HD package for a dana 60.Check for codes D32 or D36,as the first is a regular 727,the second is the HD 727.The code D83 is for a 8.75 diff, mrmopartech
