How big of a tire could I get away with if I went with 17 inch wheels? The rear wheel wells have a second internal wall from the outer body, that looks like it would not like having too wide a rubber in there, but what is do-able stock? And what offset/setback is needed to fit and nor rub? Do most people cut out/modify the inner wheel well?

I'm running 275/60's, but on 15" rims. Not sure if those will fit with 17's. It's only an extra inch into the well. Depends on how much clearence (and suspension travel) you have now
I hav a set uv 20" 275/40, but the weel welz are cut out on the outside. Therez plenty uv room on either side so I dont get any rub during hard cornering.
Not that its garanteed to aply to your car anyway, kuz mine iz a 72 New Yorker Brougham.

i have a 66 fury and not positive how close the rear wheel wells are but with the right offset I've had 295"s on mine on 14" rims.i currently have 265's on 20" rims.also have had 275's on 15" rims which is prob the best universal rear tire size.
