The ignition swich suddenly went bad a few weeks ago wile I wuz out shopping. It woud start, then die az soon az I let the lock spring back to the on pozition. I tried 3 or 4 timez. Apparently this pumped gas into the exaust and the next start attempt blowed up the ps muffler. It blowed up good!
It blowed up real good!
Replased the muffler the next day, but I'v been overloaded with machining work, doing my FEC quarterly campane report, my oldest cat getting sick & dying, the toilet cronicly clogged, and a few other time killerz, so didnt get around to replasing the ig swich till yetserday. Then the rear brakes sprung a leak, so fixed that today.
Its an odd thing that so many peepl seem to hav frequent ballast rezistor failure, but I can only recall 1 occasion way back in the 80z. I'v chanjed it many timez. I hav a few sparez in the trunk, but it never gets me going agen. Its usually the ECU.
I wuz expecting the ignition swich to be a HYOOJ hassle to replase, but it wuznt too bad. Only about 2 owrz uv leisurely work. The hardest part wuz the snap ring kuz I dont hav a proper snap ring plier.

When that happened to me, it was the dwell being off a bit. Ran fine until I got out on the free-way and "BOOM". Muffler split exactly like yours. Gave me the excuse I was looking for to install a new dual exhaust I suppose you have electronic ignition though. Still might be in the timing or advance mechanism.
I too have never had any trouble with a ballast resister, knock on wood.
Have you got a septic tank or are you on the city sewer? Constant plugging can be a full tank or tree roots in the system. Time to rent an auger.
Sorry to hear about yer Kat. They make swell friends.
Yes, its electronic. The 72 Imperial and New Yorker Brougham had that az standard, then I think it wuz next year that all Chrysler modelz chanjed to electronic ignition.
Yesterday the same problem happened agen and I found the problem today. It wuz a loose connection in the bullkhed connector block behind the fuze block. Thru careful jiggling with the enjin running I found a thick brown wire amongst the tangle that interrupted the ignition. So I wasted 60 buks and several owrz chanjing the ignition swich last week.
Its running fine now, so hopefully unplugging and replugging the connector under the hood 'fixed' it well enuff.
And my toilet unclogged itself! Its a kronic problem that alwayz fixez itself just befor I reach critical mass and replase the old iron dog leg in the big pipe rite under the floor with a PVC 45 angle. Maybe I will do it next yir. I am on septic. Had to dig up the tank and field pipes last yir to get it flowing agen.
