I bumped the timing to 12 Btdc from 7, I don't know what the baseline would've been at 7 degrees but putting it at 12 seemed to make the engine run better and it seems a bit more snappy. But I ended up getting a 9.9 second run. I couldn't launch too aggressively because even with a suregrip and 2.76s it still gets a lot of wheelspin. As far as the specs: 4400 pounds with me sitting in it, .030 over 440, six-pack pistons, sealed power replacement Magnum Camshaft, back-cut Intake valves, log manifolds, TTI 2.5 duals straight-piped, cast iron non-ported intake, single-snorkel air cleaner, Holly 750 vacuum secondaries, a reman factory high stall torque converter balanced for the Cast crank (2300-2500 RPMs??). So it's pretty much stock. The first thing I'm doing is putting on a homemade dual snorkel air cleaner with large diameter tubing to pick up cold-fresh air. So, what do you guys think?
9.9 with 2.76's is not bad at all.A set of 3.23 gears and some sticky tires would drop that considerably.
Thanks, I looked up cars with a similar 1/8th mile time and it seems that that comes out to about low to mid 15s for the quarter, very happy with this. I do have plans to do 3.23s but that wont be for awhile, the tires I have really suck lol, 235/75/15s, I want some 255s or 265s, because even when I preloaded the T/C until the car just barely bumped forward, left off the brake while simultaneously pressing the accelerator about a quarter of the way down and flooring it after it rolled a few feet I still got a good bit of wheelspin. Do you think I might be able to get it into the 13s without tearing (back) into the engine? 14s is my ultimate goal but if it go faster with a minimal amount of mods well hey, why not??
13's may be a stretch but anything is possible. You need some drag radials to eliminate wheelspin and try a shorter tire to see what it will be like with a lower gear.
I don't recall seeing what intake manifold you were running.
Headers are about the only upgrade without tearing into the engine. It sounds like it runs really well so I would concentrate on tuning and driving.
I put a homemade ramair setup on it and cut half a second off the 1/8th mile time
I used a air cleaner from a diplomat police car and made it into a dual snorkel type, I specifically wanted the rectangular snorkles so I got an air cleaner from a AMC eagle as well for the extra snorkel, I also sealed up all holes and gaps in the housing itself for an airtight seal. The tubes are indeed flex-a-spouts for rain gutters, I couldn't run them through the radiator support so I routed them so that the ends are in between the frame and radiator support, plenty of a gap there.
When I did this later run I was able to launch better with the warmer pavement, I do imagine that there is some margin for error but the distances are dead on, checked it with a laser range-finder....

when I had a stockish magnum 383 in my coronet in sportsman trim I moved from the HP 383 OEM intake to a torker with a 1/2" spacer and I picked up almost .5 sec and 1-2mph. that was with a 750 double pumper and headers, 3000 stall and 3.91's in a 3300lbs car. The gear and converter definitely helped it like that combo, but I bet almost any 383 would be faster with a torker on top

I think the corona bottle is slowing you down. 😉
