it really depends on gasket material..... I use a little weatherstrip adhesive on cork valve cover gaskets to make them stick to the cover while you lay it down but Ive never put any rtv on them. and all the tranny pans Ive done, cork gaskets and a few other types say never to use tranny gasket sealer. the ones ive seen that got it leaked soon after, especially 727s. the only stuff that ever got red trans rtv from me were toyotas.

I don't know if I'm old fashioned, or just uneducated in proper maintenance. I never use anything but the gasket for the application. No goop no mess just the proper gasket. If I take my time and make sure things are clean and straight, I find I have no troubles with the repair leaking.
