The 'Performer' intake is just an aluminium version of the stock intake. The 'Performer RPM' intake is an improvement over the stock item, but it will cost you carb-to-hood clearance since it's higher.
If you are planning no other mods then it is not worth doing unless you pick up a used one for less than $100. Of course their website recommends it they want your money.

Mopar intakes tended to vary over the years, and some are better than others. The Edelbrock Performer is supposedly based on the 1971 440 version, which is generally regarded as one of the better ones. Note though that it is not identical.
As regards the carb. Around 600-650cfm is perfect for a stockish C-body, and will support with correctly chosen parts engines in the high 400 horsepower range.
I fit a 1 inch spacer and a performer rpm under my hood with a 1 inch drop base cleaner and a 3 inch filter media. that coupled with a 750 holley and some short open exhaust really opened my motor up. I had a 383 though, your 440 would be taller, assuming thats what youve got since you never said. I guess thats standard equip on a 300 judging from everyones responses.
deck height differences are only about 3/4 of an inch between the two motors though, so it seems safe to say that a performer rpm would fit under there, as long as you have nothing between it and your carb.
