I know this has probably been beat to death in the past. Ive already skimmed thru archives and if there was a concrete answer I missed it So here goes who has Hedman shorty headers??? Ive read some magazine articles that compare the HP manifolds & Hedmans & Schumachers but I want real-world opinion based on ownership, not magazine sponsorship.
I am most interested in the Hedman #78070 shorties as I figure theyll flow better than the HP manifolds plus I want that header sound (its been years since I had headers on anything). My main concern is the flanges on them, I wonder if theyll warp a little and periodically blow gaskets. I am spoiled by leak-free manifolds, I guess.
I am not interested in trying to install the long-tube Hooker headers or in spending $600-800 on TTIs or Schumachers (regardless of their quality level), so if you folks say the Hedmans are a poor choice Ill just install a set of mid-70s quasi-HP manifolds (which I have at home) and enjoy my X-pipe system.
I have a 68 Fury III with a transplanted 69 440, all stock except for MSD-6 and an aluminum intake, running thru log manifolds. I am preparing for a 2 X-pipe exhaust upgrade (I installed TTI tails and 2 Thrush mufflers several weeks ago).

If you are worried about the thin flnages, bought a set of extra flanges and have them welded on the headers bolted on a jig or scrap head. I've got 1/2" flanges in mine, they do not leak.

Do the full-length Hedmans have 1/4" flanges? Have they leaked? I thought about welding some reinforcement to the flanges (after they were bolted to a scrap head) but was worried that might cause a leak, too, and then of course the warranty is useless. [ Edited Thu Sep 21 2006, 10:58AM ]
