Hello! I wonder if there's anyone who knows how much hoodclearenc there is with a stock 383 (air cleaner, intake etc). Car is a 66 dodge polara. Since i bought a performer rpm intake for my 383, and a edelbrock 750 carb, tho i welded another middle in my old aircleaner bottom and then lowered it abit. so wondering if theres anychance to still use the stock dual snorkel aircleaner ;(, if it wont fit i swap to a stock 4barrel intake.

Hood clearance is tight with the Performer RPM intake. I had to swap to the Edelbrock triangular aircleaner with the aluminum top. It just fits. A drop-base round aircleaner I tried was a problem because it hit the electric choke module on the carb.
A trick I came up with to check hood clearance is to unscrew the carb stud and drop a partially extended radio antenna (from a portable radio or R/C transmitter) in its place. Then close the hood on the antenna.

Great idea. Sure beats removing the rad then closing the hood and peeking through the grille with a flashlight! !drive [ Edited Thu Feb 23 2012, 04:23PM ]

i have kept an old school childs toy of silly putty in my toolbox for years and it is great for checking hood clearance issues.i dont know if it is still sold .play doh works too. i love the telescoping antennae idea.
I use the base and filter from a Mopar "unslilenced" air cleaner (pic 1 and 2) with the much larger dual snorkel top (pic 3). The secret is the height of the filter: the one for the unsilenced air cleaner is 2 3/4'' tall, while the one for the dual snorkel is too tall at 3 1/2".
I remember watching an episode of Overhaulin when they had to mill a 3/8 inch off the top of the intake. Not so sure this is a good idea. With the performer you could gain about 1/4 inch. Not much gain but every bit helps. I have a performer with a edelbrock carb and the stock air cleaner and it clears the hood, but it's close.

Really like what Kraut did. Preserves the stock dual-snorkel look (stealthy!), lowers the top so you can get that high-riser on, and is actually more open than the MOPAR unsilenced. Cool.

Thanks alot for all replies! I've lowered the stock air cleaner bottom and took the middle from a 65 olds air cleaner so it did fit on my eddy carb, and then welded them together, so it's lowered abit more then 1 inch, and then i'll try get a 3inch high airfilter. hopes that will work
