I won a 727 on Ebay but was advise by the seller that the specific one I won had "accidentally" been sold (hmmm??). He's offered another for $100 less, but with a cracked extension housing (he will supply another). What "consumables" (eg. gaskets, seals, etc) do I need to replace the housing?

Paper gasket between the housing & main case. I think one under the oval plate on the underside you have to take out to get the clip to release the housing ( cork I think, been a while ) any O-rings if needed for the speedo housing & the rear main seal.
That's about it if I remember right. Just take all the bolts out, remove the oval plate ( 2 large phillips I think ) & use snap-ring Pliers for an external snap-ring.
Once the snap-is released it should just slide off.
Butch nailed it. Large external snap ring, under a long, narrow oval plate, usually under - er, above - the transmission mount itself, held in by a pair of screws. The paper gasket should be fairly easy to get, though gasket making goo will work in a pinch if applied sparingly.
One thing to note is the speedometer gear and drive - I forget how exactly ,but there is a way to tell which gear is what ratio; I THINK they are color coded; itll matter for speedometer accuracy.
I have to do similar for a 4x4 project I am acquiring soon....

I would refuse the transmission if you can. It is too much work and as another poster said, how did the extension housing get cracked. I am sure this is the only trans the guy had and he did not want to try to sell a transmission with a cracked extension housing.

Does seem to matter anyway .. They guy seems to like to use the Internet to sell stuff (EBay) but won't respond to Ebay messages nor normal email .. Basically I can't get a response from him. Might just be negative feedback time ..
