I've got replacing the timing chain as being next on my list of VIP projects. It's been a long time since I've dealt with the dying timing chain in my St. Regis. Could someone refresh my memory as to what the 318 does when the timing chain develops a lot of slop? I haven't checked it for slop yet, but will do so next. What I'm currently experiencing is described in this thread: http://www.cbodydrydock.com/forum_viewtopic.php?5.121354
What I'm wondering now is could a dying timing chain be causing what I'm talking about in the other thread?

Fuel spitting out of the carb is an indication of a worn timing chain. Your previous post you referred to mentioned a moist gasket, that is what got me to thinking about fuel out of the carb. An old motor with some miles on it is going to need the timing chain replaced anyway. Consider replacing the timing chain & gears as part of your restoration project on the VIP. With all of the other tune-up work you did, once you replace the timing chain, that VIP should run great. Good luck. C-bodies, go fast in comfort.
As with most chains going south the car can run fine at idle and when putting into gear will stumble a bit and surge and cut out when accelerating acting as if your not getting enough fuel, when My last one went out this was the symptions and everyone kept telling me it needed a tune up to a carb rebuild and the whole time in the back of my mind I kept telling myself it was the chain,,well after spending lots of money and the endless agravation I went home pulled the front of the motor and the chain was toast/missing teeth,,it idleded perfect but when it was in gear or driving that's when all the symptons happend.

That's what mine is doing but it takes some miles of driving before it the symptom gets bad but is otherwise the same. That is what I needed to hear, I'm going to read up on the procedure. I've assisted my dad doing these but I've never done one alone. I remember the gist of it, but it's been at least eight years since the last time I helped with one of these.
If I go to a heavy duty double roller chain, there's still plenty of room inside the timing chain cover?
