My recomendation for your exhaust is to go with a 2.5 system as far as the cross over i think that is mainly personal preference as everything ive seen on that is that a cross over is just to give you even sound out of the exhaust but i may be wrong on that. i dont think you would need resonators and you might check with you local auto parts store for the mufflers though I think you would be happier spending the little extra for the flowmasters or dynomax mufflers.
A good performance exhaust shop should ask you lots of questions on you're set up and future engine set up.Things like horsepower come to mind.Is it a 74 400cu in w/8.2 compression which will require mufflers with lots of back pressure or is it a fire breathing hemi like Butch has between you're fenders. These guys on this site can give lot's of good info. The only thing i have to say is when they route the pipe on the drivers side, make sure they give you lots of room around the starter, not only to keep the heat away, but to make it easier if you have to change the starter.By the way!,while it is up on the hoist and the exhaust is off,why not throw on one of those "mini" starters from a DAK or RAM,as it's a simple bolt on and you won't believe how much faster it "kicks"you're engine over.Glen

Who makes budget concious mufflers w/some performance
I use Summit brand cheapies for about $16 each. Love the sound and performance on my 383 duals 2.5 in. I have headers and lumpy cam. the Summit cheapies seem fine.
I do not have a cross over but everything I read sounds like X has an advantage over H. Better flow and pulse EQ.
On another thread,Snotty posted tti's site and i went there and read about X crossover vs.H pipe.what an awesome site, their product is Quality just like the info that they post(are you other manufactuers listening?)They claim 12-15 rear wheel hp.If you can even get 10hp,that extra cost would be well worth it.I would love to see an unbiased test on this as we all know everybody FUDGES numbers.I would also like to see decibles tests also.I installed an H crossover on mine, but its still a bit loud.I personally would probably put one on,if it reduced the noise level. We all hate to wake up SMOKEY,while he's sleeping in the Donut Shop parking lot, don't wel..Glen
All I know is when my car is done in that department I'm not worried bout wakin smokey its the kid on the corner near my house that i want to wake up and shut down (chebbie p/u with it seems straight pipes).
I guess I must be getting old you know the saying if its too loud your too old lol
